Home Economics is a ‘life skill’ that can be transferred to many activities in every day life, both now and in the future. When you apply for a job, you present your curriculum vitae (CV). This contains relevant details, qualifications and experiences that you have acquired to that date. You don’t really have a CV for other aspects of your life, although if you did, then the activities learnt in Home Economics would surly be the most significant.
Home Economics is not just about cooking, although this is a major component of classes within the department. It is also about textiles technology. This is a creative activity aimed at meeting needs and opportunities. This is achieved through the development of products using fabric as the base material. Knowledge, skills and resources are combined to solve practical problems. Students will develop confidence in understanding problems and creating solutions to them.
The major objective of the Home Economics Department is to make teaching and learning relevant in the areas of:
Junior Food Technology
Junior Textiles Technology
Senior Food and Nutrition
Senior Food Skills
Senior Textiles, and
Hospitality. For more information, visit http://www.aranuiacademies.com/
We want students to:
Enjoy planning, preparing and cooking nutritious meals for themselves and others
Be exposed to different ingredients and savour the different tastes, textures and colours of food
Recognise that food can be a celebration
Achieve independence and better health through taking control of what they eat
Be an informed consumer
Home Economics has a focus on the Haoura (wellbeing) of individuals, families and communities. Individual wellbeing is enhanced by the development of independent living skills such as nutritional literacy, resource management and practical cooking skills.
The Home Economics department is committed to ensuring that schools values are incorporated into all lessons and activities. Students’ learning and their subsequent achievement is the focus of the department.
