Welcome to the Aranui High School International Department

Introduction

Our goal is to help students achieve academic success and to reach their personal goals during their study abroad programme while making friends, building self confidence and enjoying all that New Zealand and Aranui High School has to offer.

At Aranui High School, international students will study ESOL for a period of 4, 8 or 12 hours a week, depending on language level course requirements and personal reasons. Students will also, with the help of the International Department Staff, choose a selection of core and option subjects from learning areas such as math, science, computing, technology, language, sport, social science, finance and the arts.

The following is written by Florian, one of our Austrian students:

Programme

The International Department runs a variety of ESOL courses to suit the individual needs of our learners.

11 ESOL

This is a foundation course which caters for learners at the beginner to high-beginner stages of English language acquisition. The focus is on the learning of basic grammatical structures and vocabulary to assist students with communication skills in daily life. A strong emphasis is also placed on speaking and listening. Students will have the opportunity to study New Zealand culture and receive extra language support to assist with their learning in other subject areas. This course also serves as a stepping stone for students who wish to take Level 1 NCEA standards the following year.

101 ESOL

This course is designed for students at a pre-intermediate level. Students at this level continue building on knowledge gained in 11 ESOL, with a new emphasis on reading and writing for academic purposes. Students who intend to complete their high school education in New Zealand and attend a local or foreign tertiary institution will be encouraged to take NCEA Level 1 standards. The goal will be to gain literacy standards in reading and writing at Level 1.

201 ESOL

This is an intermediate-level course for students who have the ability to carry out daily conversation on a variety of topics in English or who have already achieved Level 1 English literacy standards. Students will work towards gaining Level 2 NCEA qualifications. At this level, it is expected that student will have strong oral and aural skills and be reading at  levels 6-7 of the New Zealand Curriculum. Students will further develop transactional and creative writing skills. At this level, students may also be working towards IELTS examinations.

301 ESOL

This course is offered to students who have completed NCEA level 2 and are working at an upper-intermediate level. Students will be studying at levels 7 and 8 of the New Zealand Curriculum. Extra tutoring and study periods for students intending to sit IELTS exams are available. If students are achieving at a very high level, they will have the opportunity to take NCEA Level 3 English Standards.

The 301 course is contingent on student level and numbers. 301 may not be offered every year.

Extra-Curricular

Students are also encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities such as drama, music, cultural clubs and sports. Students may choose to join a school-based activity or staff will assist with the joining of community clubs and teams.

Students may choose from a wide range of summer and winter sports such as cricket, volleyball, tennis, basketball, rugby, rugby league and softball.
