INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DIRECTOR AND
HEAD OF ESOL DEPARTMENT
LAUREN BRIGGS

Lauren Briggs came to Aranui High School in Term One 2010 to take up the positions of International Student Director and Head of the ESOL Department after spending eight years in Japan. Lauren has a background in foreign language learning and teaching and holds tertiary qualifications in Japanese, secondary teaching and ESOL.
Hi everyone. I’m Lauren Briggs, the new International Student Director. This is my first time living in Christchurch and I’m really enjoying discovering all that the Canterbury Province has to offer. I love being a part of the Aranui High School community because of the multi-cultural environment, friendly and supportive staff and of course, the amazing students we have here.
I hope international students come to Aranui with an open mind and heart, enthusiasm, and a desire to not only improve their English, but also to experience many different aspects of living in New Zealand. I welcome all new students to Aranui and I look forward to sharing my love of New Zealand, languages, cultures and learning with you.
ADULT ESOL TEACHER
CHRIS KJELGAARD

Chris has extensive teaching experience in a wide range of educational groups. She has taught science as well as ESOL for many years at secondary and tertiary levels.
She taught EFL in Bangkok and achieved the RSA/CELTA qualification in Britain. She then taught EFL in Italy, directed at a summer school in the UK and taught in London before returning to Christchurch.
Chris’ philosophy of education is to create secure, stimulating learning environments in which the experience of students is central to the learning process. She has a personal and professional commitment to upholding the Treaty of Waitangi and to develop awareness of cultural differences so that all students may be effectively helped to achieve personal excellence and prepare to participate in an increasingly diverse and global world.
Kia ora!
I am delighted to be a senior ESOL teacher at Aranui High School. What a richly challenging and exciting journey it has been to this point. Through ESOL teaching I have ventured overseas and experienced other cultures. My love of the wildlife and landforms of New Zealand takes me tramping, cycling and kayaking in the backcountry of this beautiful land whenever I can. My four wonderful grandchildren make me aware there is still so much to learn.
At the same time, I am really enjoying the diverse personalities and cultures that international students bring into our classrooms and I look forward to sharing with them the many opportunities available to us all at the innovative and progressive school.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT MANAGER
SUE SCHEIB

I am responsible for office administration, home stays and the welfare of students.
This covers enrolments, student records, student support, homestay liaison/pastoral care, homestay records, events and being available to the students whenever they may need me.
I lived in Singapore for 2 years, and was involved in children’s camps in Asia and New Zealand, which has given me the desire to work with international teenage students.
This is my 5th year at Aranui High School and I came here after many years of hosting students myself. I spent 7 years in office administration in a High School and 3 years as a secretary at a language school.
Through experiences I have had and am still having, I feel confident that I can help provide the students here a safe environment and I understand the students’ requirements. I have gained wisdom in bringing up my own 3 children and working with many cultures over the years.
My main goal is for the students to have the a experience and to achieve the best they can at their own level academically.
