THE BEGINNINGS OF A NEW YEAR
Kia ora koutou
Talofa lava and greetings!
Over the Christmas holidays we have watched the demolition of Aranui High School’s oldest building with great interest. Fifty years of history disappeared over a three week period, as the bulldozers got to work on this old teaching block.

On Tuesday 2nd we marked exactly 50 years to the very day, since Aranui High opened its doors. It was our teacher only day so we did not have the opportunity to celebrate this landmark date with our students. However, there will be plenty of occasions to make up for this. On Wednesday we welcomed our new intake of year 9 students. And what a fine looking lot they are! The official powhiri for our new students and staff will be taking place on Friday 5 February at 9 am.
VISIT OF THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL
Aranui High was delighted to host their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Satyanand on Wednesday 10th. And what a momentous day it was! Despite the poor weather our school hall was packed with visitors, local body representatives, our own MP Hon Lianne Dalziel, a large team from the Aranui Community Trust and all our local contributing schools bringing student leaders with their principals. A gift was given to their Excellencies, which was a wooden tea tray made out of pieces of wood from the demolished resource room (which used to be the original school music room).

The opening of the Technolgy and Art block was the second part of the programme, which began with Lady Satyanand cutting the ribbon and the Governor-General unveiling the plaque in the foyer. A tour of the new building and morning tea concluded the event.
The new Technology and Art centre, given the Ngai Tahu name Te Tai o Mahaanui, is now in use and much appreciated by staff and students alike.
